This month my focus is on African-American blogs. After all, it’s Black History Month.

That said, I've always thought of black history as American history. After all, there’s no America without African-Americans. The contributions made in music, art, business, fashion, politics and, well, pretty much everything else in our nation’s history are countless. And I think that’s why I’m having a hard time saying: Here are some great African-American blogs. Because, really these are just great blogs. They just happen to be written by African-Americans. So, with that in mind, let’s take a brief tour of these great blogs:

The Black Box Office chronicles the movement underway in the world of black independent film making. They review films, conducts interviews and blog about everything else related to film.  If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for stories that highlight independent cinema and/or minorities’ contributions to film. Pitching a story on the newest installment in the Jason Bourne franchise, however, might not work. Check out the full review here.

Afrobella blogs about “all shades of beautiful.” The site also covers fashion, beauty and music. You’ll also read about events, product reviews and possibly what’s in the news. It’s a little bit all over the place, but it’s always one woman’s voice. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for stories around cosmetics or hair care. Stories about the nation of Trinidad might stand a decent chance, too. Check out the full review here.

SoulBounce doesn’t just blog about music. I mean, they definitely do -- they blog about it a lot! But, they also provide music on their site. It’s as if to say, "Here’s our opinion. What’s yours?" If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for stories surrounding music. The genres of soul, jazz, funk, R&B and hip-hop might work well. But rock 'n'  roll shouldn’t be immediately dismissed either. Not surprisingly, if there’s an issue facing a single, black male, you’ll probably read about it on Single Black Male. The site talks about relationships, sex and marriage, but they also discuss careers, movies and any other current events that pique their interest. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for stories on men (and women) navigating the dating scene. Check out the full review here.

The banner image on Necole Bitchie is, I’m assuming, of Necole reaching out from behind a computer screen to playfully strangle her readers. This is a good metaphor for her site. For hers is a fierce entertainment blog -- but it’s not necessarily a malicious one. It is pretty thorough, though, not to mention very well read. If I were to pitch this blog, I’d look for anything surrounding the entertainment industry. Stories on individual celebrities might also work. Check out the full review here.
