    My Expertise

Area(s) of expertise: Alopecia Areata Spokesperson & Educator
      Summary of expertise:
Leading expert in women's alopecia areata. In a world that prizes hair, I can speak to the challenges this diagnosis creates for girls and women who are facing the stigma of hair loss and self-esteem challenges it presents. I’m qualified to explain the impact of this condition, along with the latest research and treatment advances. I can also discuss successful physical and emotional coping strategies that boost confidence and banish shame and isolation.

Additional Expertise: In 1997, I was diagnosed with autoimmune alopecia areata. When I realized there were no organizations that focused specifically on the females with this disorder, I founded the nonprofit Bald Girls Do Lunch. It remains the only organization to address the unique challenges of girls and women with this condition. I know firsthand what it feels like to lose a vital part of yourself, one so closely linked to feminine identity, and the toll it takes on a woman and her loved ones. I am a strong advocate for education and empowerment so that no woman ever feels alone. Our network of “bald girls” and experts offer practical and emotional support to each other both online and during events across the U.S. so they can move into self-acceptance. Since 2007, Bald Girls Do Lunch has hosted events in 29 states and 65 cities.
