Hospital Pharmacy Accreditation
Summarize your expertise in greater detail
Hospitals today face extensive legislation and regulations that have left many feeling financially “pinched” and unprepared for government-mandated audits. And while many are striving to earn accreditation from the nation’s leading surveyors to enhance patient care and be better prepared for such audits, some may not realize that not all accreditation surveys are created equal and that accreditation does not necessarily guarantee compliance with regulations.
Understanding the evolving role of accreditation in healthcare, Pat Uselton, vice president of professional services for Cardinal Health’s Pharmacy Solutions business, helps hospital pharmacies prepare for a variety of accreditation/regulatory surveys as well as those performed by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Uselton has been a hospital pharmacist since 1972 and has more than 38 years experience in the health care industry, guiding pharmacies through more than 2,000 regulatory and accreditation surveys.
Uselton’s expertise is unique in that he focuses primarily on the processes that promote compliance with standards and regulations. Uselton and his team provide a wealth of resources, including accreditation preparedness assessments, medication safety assessments, operational assessments, regulatory compliance assessments, licensing assistance, gap analysis tools, USP Chapter compliance tools, failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), root cause analysis (RCA) workshops and a variety of other tools and educational programs.
Books & Articles Published
Uselton is co-author of several American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) publications, including Preparing to Meet Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals and Assuring Continuous Compliance with Joint Commission Standards: A Pharmacy Guide. He also frequently presents to national and state pharmacy groups on accreditation, regulatory, medication safety and other related topics.
Educational Background
Uselton earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Houston. He is currently a registered pharmacist in Texas and is a member of the ASHP.
