Impact of Work Stoppage in the Shipping Industry
Joseph Bonney
Senior Editor
The Journal of Commerce
"The shipping industry has been transfixed by the possibility of the first Maine-to-Texas port strike in 35 years. The impact of a work stoppage involving the International Longshoremen's Association would quickly ripple through supply chains and the broader economy. Shipments would be delayed to factories and retail shelves. Companies would have to spend to reroute shipments and implement emergency plans."
Bonney, senior editor of The Journal of Commerce, has covered the International Longshoremen's Association longer and more thoroughly than any other reporter. He has reported extensively on the ILA's current negotiations with the U.S. Maritime Alliance and the union's threat to strike if a contract isn't reached by Sept. 30. He is available to discuss the negotiations and the impact on trade and the economy. The Journal of Commerce reports on waterfront labor relations year-round as part of its coverage, and Bonney has been the voice breaking many of these major stories.

NFL Antitrust/Collusion Lawsuit
Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt
Willard and Margaret Carr Professor of Labor and Employment Law
Indiana University Maurer School of Law
Dau-Schmidt, a nationally recognized teacher and scholar on labor and employment law, is available to comment on the NFL salary cap/collusion lawsuit: "The suit is fairly straightforward. The NFL is exempt from the antitrust laws only if they have a collective-bargaining agreement. The owners cannot among themselves agree to and enforce team salary caps."

Financial Literacy for College Students
Francisca Amador
Financial Literacy Educator
Blackhawk Bank
"Many economic and financial experts warn that the student-debt levels could potentially cause the next financial crisis and stifle recovery in the housing market. Not only are students graduating with higher debt, but they also accumulate additional debt and damaged credit through poor financial decisions and habits gained from not understanding credit and budgeting. Financial literacy is rarely included in curriculum for young adults. Without this important knowledge, students can quickly damage their financial health with a few missteps."
Amador is available to speak on this issue and provide financial tips and best practices for college students.

Consumers Are in the Driver's Seat This Holiday Season: What Retailers/Brands Can Do About It
John Fleming
Board Advisor
Jingit
"The power shift is on. Consumers are in the driver's seat, dictating the terms on which they want to interact with brands. And brands are scrambling, trying to determine the secret sauce of where, when and how to engage with consumers and move from strictly business transactions to building ongoing, relevant relationships with consumers. New ad technology platforms are emerging to help brands carry conversations out of the bounds of the online or mobile ecosystem, and into the real world, through to the point of transaction; and then sustain that hard-won brand loyalty for the long term -- the Holy Grail for every brand, whether it's the largest retailer in the world or the small business on Main Street."
Jingit is the first company to pay consumers cash instantly for engaging with the brands they like. Fleming can speak to how consumers benefit from this engagement in terms of building relationships with brands that are relevant to their live; and he can discuss how brands and advertisers who move into a sequenced, ongoing conversation with the consumer will bridge the gap of shopping platform and device types, and how/why savvy brands will conduct ongoing conversations that become increasingly more personalized, relevant and welcomed by the consumer -- thanks to the feedback and interaction at every point in the dialogue. Fleming is the former chief merchandising officer/chief marketing officer of WalMart and the former president/CEO of WalMart.com.

Boost Your Apartment Safety
John McGrail
CEO
Mayo Group
"Apartment buildings must conform to certain fire precautions, but you can help. Don't overcrowd your apartment with furniture and belongings that could impede easy access to escape routes. If necessary, rent a storage unit for excess clutter. Always plan two escape routes and be extra careful with space heaters or any other devices that contain a heating element. Never leave these appliances on when you are not at home or when you are sleeping, and make sure they are located a safe distance from any fabrics or other flammable materials."
