      Summary of expertise:
      Deepak Divan is President and CTO of Varentec, a company funded by green-tech VC Khosla Ventures, that is providing innovative solutions for a smart and dynamically controllable grid. He has over 35 years of experience in academia and industry in the areas of power electronics applied to utility and industrial systems, is a Fellow of the IEEE, and past President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society. From 2004-2011, he served as Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Founding Director of the Intelligent Power Infrastructure Consortium at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. From 1995-2004, he served as Founder, Chairman and CEO/CTO of Soft Switching Technologies, a VC funded company in the industrial power quality market. He has over 250 papers and 40 issued and pending patents. His research interests and expertise are in grid control, sustainable energy and power electronics.

      - Awarded the IEEE William E Newell Field Medal in 2006, the highest award given by the IEEE in the area of power electronics.
      - Elected President of the IEEE Power Electronics Society for 2009 and 2010.

      - Invited member of Subcommittee on Science for Energy Technology, organized by the Office of Science - DOE in 2010 to advise them on science advances needed in smart grid, CCS, fuel cells, energy storage, lighting, bio-fuels and other areas.
      - Evaluated DOE ARRA awards for the Smart Grid Investment Grant program.
      - Invited member of advising panel for Agency for Science Technology and Research (ASTAR) in Singapore from 2007-10 on strategic direction for energy research
      - Advised DOE and FERC after the 2003 North-Eastern blackout. Data from I-Grid (developed by Soft Switching Technologies) was used by the US-Canada Presidential Task Force investigating the blackout.
