    Summarize your expertise in greater detail Cynthia Thomas Calvert, a nationally-recognized expert in Family Responsibilities Discrimination law, is the founder and principal of Workforce 21C. She helps employers manage today’s evolving workforce, including preventing family responsibilities discrimination and systemic gender discrimination, implementing nonstigmatized flexible work programs, and creating inclusive workplace cultures.

    Ms. Calvert is a lawyer, speaker, writer and consultant who pioneered the research behind FRD. She serves as the Senior Advisor for Family Responsibilities Discrimination at the Center for WorkLife Law, based at the University of California Hastings College of the Law, where she was Deputy Director from 2003 to 2010. She was also the co-founder and co-director of WLL’s initiative to promote flexible schedules in legal employment, the Project for Attorney Retention. At both WLL and PAR, she led groundbreaking studies of family responsibilities discrimination, professional advancement on flexible schedules, obstacles to successful implementation of flexible work programs, and the advancement of women in the workplace.

    Ms. Calvert co-authored with Joan Williams the only legal treatise on FRD: WorkLife Law’s Guide to Family Responsibilities Discrimination (WLL Press 2006). She, Williams, and Gary Phelan are currently working on an FRD treatise for BNA Bloomberg. Calvert and Williams have also authored Flex Success: The Lawyer’s Guide to Balanced Hours (WLL Press 2011) and Solving The Part-Time Puzzle: The Law Firm's Guide to Balanced Hours (NALP 2004).

    Ms. Calvert has written numerous articles that have appeared in publications such as the ABA's Law Practice Management, The Legal Times, Corporate Counsel, Women Lawyers Journal, The San Diego Lawyer and Raising The Bar, and on the Internet (including Kiplinger.com, HR Daily Advisor, and law.com). She has been quoted in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, ABA Journal, Associated Press, NPR, National Law Journal, New York Lawyer, Legal Times, Financial Times, Diversity & the Bar, Working Mother, and other publications. She speaks frequently about family responsibilities discrimination, flexible work arrangements, retention and advancement of women, and inclusion. She has testified before the Congressional Joint Economic Committee and the EEOC.

    Ms. Calvert practices employment law in the District of Columbia and Maryland. She was with the D.C. litigation firm of Miller, Cassidy, Larroca & Lewin, LLP (now part of Baker Botts LLP) for fourteen years, six as a partner. Since 2000, she has had her own employment law practice in which she counsels businesses on compliance.
